On the morning of June 30, 1908, a massive explosion was heard over the Eastern Siberian Taiga, a mostly unpopulated area of Russia, instantly flattening an estimated 80 million trees over 830 square miles. To this day, the origin of this formidable deflagration, colloqually known as the Tunguska event, has not been ascertained, and theories abound, including a small black hole, a methane explosion, or even an UFO crash landing. The current scientific consensus points towards the atmospheric explosion of a meteoroid.

833-45’s full-length album Tunguska uses recordings of shortwave radios and radio scanners to capture the sheer power of the Tunguska event. It goes beyond mere loudness to convey the elemental shock of a collision from outer space.

Within Kevin Krebs’ diverse discography, Tunguska stands out as a towering exemplum, a powerful monument of sound, a record like no other in contemporary electronic music. It’s a blast, really!

Tunguska was originally released in 2008 on the Russian netlabel Musika Excentrica, which has since disappeared.
