no type presents: 7 moments of plain joy

August 18, 2006

a few years ago, we have decided to choose a cat as our mascot. those who know us know that the cat represents no type quite well: spending most of its time asleep, allergic to work, living room anarchist, hostile to strangers, although extremely picky when it comes to artistic matter. to the point where we figured this cat was having a bad influence on us, because we weren’t doing anything anymore.

still, should we get rid of the cat? not at all: we just had to find a more proactive one. incidentally, an all-black, so-called "tabby" specimen was strolling by during one of those improductive days. seduced by the proud and nonchalant animal, we decided to spend our last savings coercing convincing it to work for us. many hours of negociation later, this was a done deal, and the nameless cat (like all cats, it doesn’t respond to any name) accepted for its likeness to appear on the pages of our web site, provided we supply it with an undisclosed amount of cat food and assorted petting.

which brings us to our site. because we rebuilt it. you know, since 1998, one of our traditions is to rebuild our site entirely for no good reason. well, in this particular case, there was improvement to be made. first, reorganise what looked more and more like the antichamber of a dusty used bookstore. then, add new functionalities, such as these formidable streaming buttons allowing you to hear, in real time, all no type albums, without even having to download them. perfect for office ambience. & we promise we’ll add more functionalities soon.

but more importantly. we have taken a grave decision. CD & vinyl sales are becoming a desperate cause. we have not a penny to release anything, & we don’t seem to be eligible to grants from our great country canada. so dang it, we say, we’ll do MP3 again, it’s the simplest way to wreak havoc in the music industry. there & tough luck.

  • in the meantime, we have managed to release one CD. but of course! it’s a collaboration with US label mental monkey, too. we’re talking about the eastern stars (also known as a mixel pixel side project) and their new album called july 5th, 1961. you like pretty & modern folk songs? either way. you’ll like this album anyway. but why should you trust me of all people? go listen to some tracks online.

that’s not all, there’s also 3 new free no type albums for download or to stream on our site:

  • camp’s latest albums have been out on the bricolodge & panospria labels. it was about time the no type founder came back home, & that’s now the case. can’t tell is 4 new rhythmic & melodic songs which don’t sound like anything yet sound strangely familiar. well, it’s camp.
  • milliseconde topographie is a montreal-based girl/boy duo that does sweet ambient musique concrète. oxymoron, say you? that’s because you don’t know anything. fortunately, with paperasses éparses, nicolas et delphine will show you how wrong you were.
  • it’s also a pleasure an a honour to welcome dutch composer jos smolders in our catalogue. with hemel, he offers us a long & stunning work dedicated to another exceptional composer, kevin m krebs, who is with us since our beginnings. (actually, kevin told me he was preparing something for no type in the near future. be excited.)

& that’s not to forget three new sine fiction releases. this time, we’re tacking three classics:

but that’s not even it, because we have also added the complete catalogues of various labels we like a lot: bricolodge, intransitive, kracfive, mental monkey, nishi, panospria & phthalo. come listen &/or buy online.

we’re there for you! you doubly it? doubt still!

see you soon

new site, new albums!

August 12, 2006

welcome to our new web site, spacier and with many new functions, such as an open source player for streaming.

as promised, we are launching new releases in our regular collection (can't tell by camp, paperasses éparses by milliseconde topographie, and hemel (for km krebs) by jos smolders) as well as on the popular sine fiction series (out of the silent planet by ronnie cramer, a journey in other worlds by michael north, and starship troopers by hinyouki). enjoy!
